As of this week, I've broken through the 30,000 word mark! Between a multi-day internet outage and me getting distracted by several side projects, I'm pleased with my progress. If you're keeping track - I'm at 33 beads (18 silver for Act 1, 15 moonstone for Act 2) and 6 diamonds.
Last week I wrote about switching the order of a few scenes, but this week I found myself stuck on writing them even with the changes. I ended up identifying the core issue - I had written in a lot of fluff and character development without demonstrating the stakes attached to the actual story. As a result, I ended up doing a pretty thorough rework of a lot of Act 2 (Fun & Games/B Story, I'm looking at you). Each scene I've got planned for the next couple of weeks now has a thorough card in Scrivener describing what the stakes for the characters are and how I plan to demonstrate them.
I've got this tendency to always want a sweet treat when I start my writing sessions. Ironically, the day I wrote a scene about food as something healing (with a working title of "Vicdash"), I had a bit of a DoorDash debacle of my own. I ordered one of those mini Japanese cheesecakes, and to my surprise 4 of them arrived at my door labeled for someone else. To Emilia, who must have received my paltry order of 1 - I'm very sorry. Please know that your sacrifice kept me energized through a near all-night writing session.
If you've read this far into this post I'd imagine you want a little hint about what's to come in Tandem. I've actually got some concept art coming in soon (within a month) for my alien lead, so I'll be posting it to my socials - and potentially to a blog post - once it arrives. I'm looking forward to it and I hope you are as well!
Next week, I'm going to be writing the scene that the whole first half of this novel has been building towards.
With love,
Aven
